Search Engine Optimization Companies Are Not Created Equal

By Chris Anderson, Ph.D.

You have decided to hire a SEO company to improve your search engine rankings. Congratulations! Now, how are you going to select the right company for you?

For many business owners, deciding who to hire as a search company is one of the most important, but most difficult choices they face in their business. Why? Simply because most business owners don't know enough about this business to properly select the right person or group.

Fortunately, there are a number of simple steps and criterion that you can apply to find the right search company for you.

What Does Their Site Say About Their SEO Abilities

Take a look at their current web site as well as other sites that they own.... are you impressed with the results. One note however is that some companies, like are own, are in the middle of starting a new site for SEO activities.... if this is the case, simply ask for proof of other sites they have optimized for THEMSELVES.

Have Them Explain In Detail What They Plan To Do

Our belief is that if a company cannot show you a step by step plan to attack your site, then they don't deserve your business. Make sure you interview 3 candidates so you can compare and contrast their approaches.

Three Major Items To Investigate

Bottom line, you want to generate additional sales for your company. In our experience, any Internet marketing campaign that is successful requires the components before it really starts making the cash register ring:

- What Search Terms; -- The first step in any SEO plan of attack is to get other, related web sites linking to yours. This greatly helps improve your rankings and in one form or the other, is the major activity performed by your search company.

Develop The Right Expectation Up Front

Ideally, you would spend $5 on search engine optimization and be ranked #1 for all your desired keywords.... an ideal dream but not realistic. Your search engine consultant should be able to sit down with you and help you grasp what is, and is not realistic.

By following these guidelines, you could make a very good choice for a search optimization company. Unfortunately, however, there is a ton of fly-by-night operations out there so be careful and do your due diligence.
