A Free For All Site (FFA) is a website where you can post a link to your website which creates a backlink and ad for your website. Many times it automatically posts to many other similar sites within the system as well. When you post a link you are also agreeing to give permission, whether you realize it or not, to receive confirmation emails back from the site owner.
For a newbie this can sometimes be frustrating as they begin to receive a flood of confirmation emails that contain offers from others and do not see a flood of sales of their own offers. It can be confusing about what just happened, and why this didn't work as they expected it to.
Let's look at what just happened and the true purpose behind a FFA site. The real reason for a FFA site is so the owner can promote his products and services to the poster. They are not just being nice people who give free advertising space to others, if it really worked, they'd be diligent in doing that. When people post on their page, that's the bait so they can send their confirmation emails with their offers to you.
The confirmation emails you receive are not considered spam, as you had agreed to receive them for the privilege of posting on their site. Who reads these ads anyways? Is posting to FFA's a total waste of time then? Not necessarily, as you will get an occasional sale, people do go back and post repeated ads and sometimes take a quick look while trying to see where their links are.
So how do you really use them for your benefit? Get your own FFA site to promote your business. There are many excellent ones out there, shop around to find which you like best. Many offer free or paid upgrade versions and the phrase "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. I've used several kinds and found the paid upgrades more than paid for themselves.
You can promote any product through this method; information products, crafts, vitamins, whatever. You could have the very best on the entire internet, but if nobody sees your offer, it's not going to get the sales you desire. It takes traffic to get sales. These sites are options for driving those numbers to your site. Free classified ads sites are also in this same category with the same purpose and can be worth pursuing.
