Freelance Copywriter 101: How to Make a Smart Hiring Choice

By Jason Leister

If you've been in business for any length of time, you already know that your sales copy can mean the difference between making a lot of money and making nothing at all.

Some business owners consider learning how to write copy a good investment of their time and effort. But for most business owners, it's often easier and more profitable to just hire someone else to do it.

That's where a freelance copywriter comes into the picture. But here's the problem: Not all freelance copywriters know what they're doing. And even if they do, sometimes they just aren't a good fit for your business.

So how can you make a smart choice when it comes to hiring someone to write the copy for your business?

Here are just a few important tips:

1. Don't Ignore the First Impression

You'll find a long list of different personality types in the copywriting world. Some are meek and mild and some think that you owe them 50% of your business just for taking your call.

Here's what you need to keep in mind, "How they do anything is how they do everything."

When you are interviewing a freelance copywriter, just make sure you don't ignore the impression you got right off the bat. Sure people can change. But the fact is, that's a pretty rare thing.

2. What Happens When Things Crash and Burn?

If a freelance copywriter sits down and puts together a sales letter that makes you a million dollars, you're probably not going to be complaining.

But most promotions aren't big winners. And it's the reaction of your copywriter when things DON'T work out that will make you wish you had chosen differently.

If they blame the results on you or your business, that doesn't really help you much at all.

When you're interviewing a freelance copywriter, just be sure to ask them what happens when things don't work out.

Their answer will tell you everything you need to know about how to move forward.

3. Understand There Are NO Guarantees

No freelance copywriter can guarantee you a certain level of results. If that's what you're looking for, the only takers you'll find are writers so desperate, they'll say anything to get your business.

So don't fall for that. If you are assured a specific result, take that as a clue of bad things to come and move on to the next freelance copywriter on the list. You won't be sorry.
