Going camping? Got glow sticks? Then you got fun!

By Jim Busby

Glow sticks are the perfect add-in to your camping preparation kit. They're safe, long lasting and fun! Plus they're convenient for those romantic, moonlight walks and midnight runs to the bathroom.

Planning a camping trip this summer? Don't forget the glow sticks. Aside from being just plain fun to use, glow sticks have several distinct advantages over lanterns and flashlights.

They're portable, dependable and long lasting. You don't have to fiddle with knobs or switches to get them to turn on. They come equipped with a handy string attached for easy carrying. Once they're activated, they give off a bright, powerful glow that lasts for hours!

They don't need replacement bulbs or batteries. And you don't need matches or fuel to get them lit. Simply bend the glow stick and shake gently to activate (bending breaks the little glass tube inside and causes a chemical reaction; shaking mixes the two chemicals within the tube).

Variety. Variety. Variety. Glow sticks come in a range of sizes and colors. Choose the color that suits your mood, matches your sneakers or goes well with the color of your tent. Use long glow sticks for campsite lighting, to mark pathways or even to decorate your camping environment. Nothing's prettier at night than dozens of colorful glow sticks dangling from low-hanging tree branches, maybe swaying in a slight breeze as you and your pals sit around the campfire.

Another good thing is that they don't emit heat - so they're safe for young kids to use. And, best of all, no flame; that's a big plus, considering the concerns over forest fires in the dry summer weather.

What's more, they're waterproof! You can drop them in the stream without worrying that they'll go out. In fact, you can even bring them in with you when you go swimming in the pond or favorite swimming hole - not that you would ever go swimming unattended at night, of course! They're even fun to use in the pool - toss a few glow stick into the water and have the kids dive and retrieve them.

Glow sticks are also waterproof. Even if you happen to drop one into the stream on the way back from the bathroom late at night, it won't go out. In fact, you can even toss a few glow sticks into the swimming pool and have the kids dive in and retrieve them - it's good, cool fun!
