What Brands of Sewing Machine Do You Like?

What does a sewing machine cost at the present? Prices vary from about $75 to over $12,000.

What are the basic kinds of machines on the market today? You will find a group of low end throw away models, low end mechanical machines, midline electronic machines, fully computerized machines, and combination computerized sewing and embroidery machines. Generally, the more a machine does, the more it costs. The better the machine, the more it costs.

What are the primary sewing machine brands?

A generic brand is a brand that depends on another company to supply its machines. Among the better known generic brands today are the Necchi, Dressmaker, Simplicity, Bernette, and White sewing machines. Necchi, originally an Italian brand, is marketed by Allyn International located in Denver, Colorado, but machines are drawn from a variety of generic sources. Dressmaker and Simplicity have just recently faded from the scene. Bernette sewing machines are manufactured for Bernina as a low end offering. Kenmore is the brand under which Sears sells many of its sewing machines. In the past, the Wards machine was sold in similar fashion. The White Sewing Machine Company opened in 1866 and was well known for offering small inexpensive sewing machines and attachments. Over the years the brand has been paired with a variety of other lines as their low end offerings.

Baby Lock Sewing Machines are owned by Tacony Corporation in Fenton, Missouri. This brand originated with the introduction of the home serger in 1964. The brand has grown and expanded since then offering top quality sewing machines and sergers. Its sergers offer features available nowhere else. Like most modern sewing machine companies, it draws from several manufacturers for various parts of its line. It maintains a quality control and design team from the United States to implement its designs and enhancements through its world wide marketing and production.

Brother International is a Japanese manufacturer that produces hundreds of different products from fax machines, to consumer electronics, and of course sewing machines. They actually market two distinct lines of sewing machines. On the low end, they sell the Brother sewing machine through large box stores like Walmart. Prices will range from under a hundred dollars up to about four hundred dollars. Then the market a quality line of sewing machines under the Pacesetter By Brother brand name. This line includes some of the best midrange and high end sewing machines. Prices begin about $400 and extend up to about $9,000 for combination computerized sewing and embroidery. Brother also produces many generic machines for other companies like Sears.

Bernina is the luxury sewing machine made in Switzerland. Customer loyalty is the highest in the industry. It is famous for its solid dependability, advanced features, and innovation. It has been a leader in the industry introducing the first zig zag, hem machine, and Microsoft Windows operating system. Its newest model 830 has the largest stitch offering on the market, measures 12 arm, and is full of advanced features. The cost is $12,000.

The Elna brand was recently purchased by Janome of Japan. It will continue to be its own disctinctive brand line reflecting the femine styling of the Swiss, but manufactured and marketed by Janome.

Husqavarna, also known as Viking, is a company that traces its roots to Sweden. It is an historic line of machines will known for durability and simplicity. Today it is owned by a conglomerate that also owns Singer and Pfaff. It is currently produced in China.

Janome is the largest manufacturer of sewing machines in the world with over 50,000,000 machines produced. For a time, it marketed its machines under the New Home brand in the United States, but all of Janomes brand specific models are now sold under the Janome brand. Janome is also well known for its generic machines produced for other companies and sold under their brands like Kenmore and Wards. Janome is well known for their Memory Craft series which incorporates advanced robotic technologies into their computerized sewing and embroidery machine line.

The Pfaff brand is traced back to 1862 and Georg Michael Pfaff of Germany. This premium line of sewing machines gained a strong reputation of German engineering. The brand still maintains the flavor of the tradition, while it is manufactured in China with the Singer and Husqavarna lines.

The most popular brand of sewing machines is Singer. Since 1851, the Singer brand has been almost synonymous with sewing machines. During the early years the I.M. Singer & Company overwhelmed the market, while hundreds of other companies came and went. Even today it continues to be a popular brand manufactured in China.
